In a world where the demand
for information is steadily increasing in a considerably
fast pace, it can be said that journalism is gradually
reaching its golden age.
The Age of Information has
come, and to quench humanity's thirst for knowledge,
people have come up with various ways of enhancing the
art of journalism.
The Filipinos Press Club-UAE
has been one of the many groups with the goal of
developing future responsible as well as excellent
journalists and media personalities.
Thus, the July 11 to 25
First Summer Youth Media Workshop conducted at the
Majestic Hotel in Dubai for three Fridays.
As the three Fridays were
well spent with lectures and orientations on the history
of the mass media, communications, news writing,
features writing, photojournalism, and broadcast as well
as electronic journalism plus public relations, the art
of speech delivery and attaining self-confidence,
another memorable day was had on July 15.
It was memorable because
all the youngsters had a glimpse of the
behind-the-scenes in television and newspaper production
at the City 7 TV station in Dubai Media City and at the
headquarters of The Khaleej Times in Al Quoz.
Accompanied by ABS-CBN
broadcast journalist Rachel Salinel, Gulf News senior
photographer Ryan Hernandez and TRACCS public relations
consultant Art Los Banos, they toured the different
production booths at City 7 TV before having the
opportunity to see how the reality programme "City
Woman" is taped.
They witnessed the tedious
manipulation of the lights, the panning of the cameras,
and the play on the graphics.
Over at Khaleej Times in
the afternoon, they observed how reporters, sub-editors,
senior editors and everyone inside a newsroom have to
work together to put to bed daily issues.
Of course, even
journalists, despite their demanding and stressful jobs,
have to refuel.
Having said that, the
participants also had a heyday at Mercato for lunch.
I know. I was one of the
participants and I say, it has made my summer holiday
worthwhile.
